Surviving Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a holiday where we focus on gathering as a family and eating a lovely meal.  But how do you avoid temptations?  There’s grandma’s famous pumpkin pie, a delicious turkey and “spiced” treats of every kind.

Over the holidays, there are so many yummy foods.  It’s hard to not fill up that big dinner plate.  Here’s something to consider; the average adult stomach is the size of your fist!  Look at your fist, then look at your plate.  Can all the fit in there?  When choosing your foods, try to take lots of veggies.  Have some turkey and stuffing because hello it’s delicious.  The important thing is to be mindful of how much you are eating.  You don’t NEED to fill up your plate.

Dessert

There is no avoiding dessert on Thanksgiving.  To avoid pumpkin pie is going against the laws of Thanksgiving all together (unless you’re one of those strange people who don’t like it).  I spend a lot of time baking and contributing to the problem.  Have a treat here or there.  I know I will.  Everything in moderation folks!  You probably don’t need to eat 5 treats.  The first one tastes just as good as the fifth one – I promise!

You can still enjoy all the delicious foods that the holiday’s bring.  I feel is very important to treat yourself to your favourite foods from time to time.  If you deprive yourself of food you actually like, you’re more likely to go on a binge which isn’t good for anyone!

The fall is the best time (in my opinion) to get outside for a hike.  My family usually goes on a hike after our GIANT Thanksgiving meal.  The leaves are changing, and it’s so pretty.  Think about taking your family on a neighbourhood walk after your gathering.  Or send the kids outside to run (and chase them).  Either way, moving always helps.

Be Thankful

Most of all, I hope you all take a second to be thankful for what you have in your lives this weekend.  I’m thankful for my wonderful family, my supportive and encouraging husband, my two beautiful daughters and my friends who are more like extended family.  I’m thankful that we live in a country where we will have a wonderful hearty meal to sit down to with these people we care so much about.

Get moving because you’ll feel better than you did yesterday!
